Schiau Memorial

16 February 2019

Description: a ski contest for all ages and levels of difficulty.

It was introduced by the Mountain Rescue team in memory of their colleague, Nicolae Schiau, one of the first who identified, in the 1980s, the tourist potential of Râușor area, situated at a 1,200 metre altitude.

“Nicolae Schiau was a pioneer in the area. In 1980, together with some engineers at Hidroconstrucția, he made possible the inauguration of the first ski slope in Râușor. Two years later there was a ski lift with the cable fixed to pillars and operating with bateries. Without this ski lift, the area would have been an old workers’ neighbourhood left behind after the hydrotechnical works on Râu Mare Retezat”, declared Ovidiu Bodean, the manager of Hunedoara Mountain Rescue Public Service.

Râuşor ski slope is 1,200 metres long and has two options for descent, certified for different levels of difficulty.
